An article written by PYA Principal Sarah Bowman was featured in a recent issue of the Journal of Health Care Compliance. The national bimonthly publication provides current and emerging trends and issues related to healthcare compliance.
Bowman’s article, “Behavioral Health in 2023 – Key Changes and Compliance Considerations,” conveys the unique risks experienced by behavioral healthcare organizations and new opportunities generated from changes and flexibilities extended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bowman describes regulatory and reimbursement requirements and states the need for a clear understanding of related controls and effective internal auditing processes.
In her article, Bowman states
“For 2023, we note a convergence of regulatory and reimbursement shifts combined with a continued interest from new entrants (mostly technology companies) along with merger and acquisition activity….While the increase in providers in the space is a welcomed trend, the focus from the enforcement community elevates the need for a clear understanding of relevant guidelines and the internal controls in place to mitigate errors….Maintaining robust internal auditing and monitoring processes for behavioral health services continues to be of tremendous importance for behavioral healthcare organizations.”
The Journal of Health Care Compliance is published by Wolters Kluwer. Bowman’s article is in the March-April 2023 issue, which is available to subscribers of the journal.
